FinMobility visited renewable products refinery in Rotterdam together with transport and mobility stakeholders from Brussels.
The visit, organised by FinMobility, brought together transport and mobility experts from Brussels to discuss the future of renewable fuels, evolving EU regulation and the practical challenges of the green transition in the transport sector.
Particular attention was given to the role of renewable diesel (HVO) in reducing emissions from heavy-duty transport, the implementation of RED III, the importance of the circular economy, and questions related to feedstock availability and waste-based raw materials. Participants also had the opportunity to learn more about Neste’s major investment in Rotterdam, where a new refinery expansion is expected to be completed in 2027. Once finalised, the Rotterdam refinery will become the world’s largest renewable fuels refinery.
The visit reinforced the importance of maintaining a truly technology-neutral approach in EU climate and transport policy. Renewable fuels already provide scalable and rapidly deployable solutions, particularly for transport segments where electrification is still not yet feasible due to infrastructure limitations, operational environments or vehicle requirements.
At the same time, renewable fuels contribute to the circular economy, improve resource efficiency and strengthen Europe’s energy resilience in the current geopolitical environment.
FinMobility would like to thank Neste’s team for the warm welcome and fruitful discussions, as well as all participating partners for joining the visit.
